Northern KY District to Launch New Disaster Reponse Team

posted on August 17

The sanctuary of Strawberry UMC after being flooded.

Due to unforeseen issues, the training will be moved to Central UMC in Maysville, KY.

In response to the recent flooding this past month in the Northern Kentucky District, we are sponsoring the formation of a coordinated disaster response for our congregations, their members and their communities. Both our most significantly affected churches, Augusta Trinity UMC and Strawberry UMC (in Flemingsburg), have benefited from the assistance of neighboring churches, but we can be more organized for the future. No one expects fires, tornadoes, blizzards, and floods, but we can be prepared to respond as the church when they do happen.

This day long training and organizing session is the first step. This training will be held on Saturday, September 23, from 9 AM to 4 PM at Central UMC in Maysville.

Each church is encouraged to send one or more individuals who can then carry the information back to their churches.  Jim Morse, our Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, has many years experience in local and national disaster relief and is both a knowledgeable and practical teacher.

Below is a description of the training and organizing session:

CONNECTING NEIGHBORS:

A “Disaster Ready Congregations” Curriculum of the United Methodist Church

To the people of the United Methodist Church and their community partners:
This curriculum is intended for broad use by dedicated volunteers willing and able to facilitate workshops and webinars with the goal of inspiring congregations and communities to be better able to minimize disaster-caused harm to people and property and to respond to our neighbors in helpful, cooperative and caring ways on behalf of the church and in the spirit of Jesus Christ.

This curriculum incorporates knowledge and experience gleaned over many years by dedicated volunteers who have served their neighbors on behalf of the church. Rich information has also been included from other organizations and community partners - most notably the American Red Cross, National Disaster Interfaith Network, and FEMA. UMCOR is grateful to these partners for providing public access to helpful resources.

Your partners in disaster ministry,
The United Methodist Committee On Relief
U.S. Disaster Response
